i just bought the collectors edition cd-rom of this game and when i use my cd key on the back of the manual, it says its an error. im sure ive typed it in correctly about a million times.
have you heard anymore of these errors? can you help?

If the above doesn't help, then go back to the store and demand a new one.
I've experienced that the store put the wrong CD in the casing in the past, though it's very rare.
