No, I think he's just a typical American slogan: fat and lazy.
Now Calvin & Hobbes, there's a great comic.
I love Garfield, simple but funny.

I used to read them in the sunday paper when I was younger, but I don't really have any interest any more. I do still read comic books though.
I used to read Garfield as well, I even had most of the books... they went to my nieces at some point now they laugh at them.
