Today's date in the Land of the Dead.

Ever wonder who or what
that motif is in the background
of the Grim Fandango Network?
That is the Aztec Calendar Wheel
known as the Fifth Sun.
It charts the passage of Time
and cosmic events here in the
5th and final creation of the world.
The Aztec culture believed
their world began on the calendar date
of 13 Reed(1011 AD) and they believed
their world would end on the calendar
date of 4 Movement.
To ensure this apocalypse
never happened, the priest cast
and their entire civilization
kept themselves busy with warfare,
human sacrifices, and blood offerings
to the sun, to prevent this calamity
from ever coming to pass.
Ironically enough
the Spanish Conquistador
Hernan Cortes met with
Aztec ruler Montezumma
on a calendar date of
4 Movement.

Mesoamerican time keeping.
(see post at thread beginning)

Grim Fandango amongst other things
is based upon Mayan and Aztec art.
Well the background of this Forum
depicts the calendar stone called
the 5th Sun it is the age in which
we now are living. The Aztec, Mayan
and originally the OLmec's meassured
time with 2 sets of calendars.

The Sacred Almanac
a calendar consisting of 260 days.
(two gears turning together
the small gear having the numbers
1 to 13 on it. The larger gear having
20 symbols the things Aztec's
considered vital to good health
and survival. When these 2 gears
turned, it took 260 days
for one complete cycle
to repeat itself.)

and The Vague Year
a calendar consisting of 365 days.
(one gear with 365 symbols on it
a year consisting of 18 months
each having 20 days to it,
with a 5 day period called
Uayeb or the sleep at the end
making it 365 days long.

These two calendars or 3 gears
all turn together to chart out
the date in time. While we say
as in this post:
Friday July 12th 2002
they would have said:
13 Water 5 Chen

*and like in Baron Maunchausen
they would have said
it was tea time too.*

these calendars rotating together
took 52 years to complete one cycle
and the Aztec and Mayan people KNEW
the solar year was 365 1\4 days long
but it messed up the symetry of their
wheel so do not believe in Feb 29th
at all. (anyone born that day did not
and do not exist to the Mesoamerican
people's.)
the wheel calculations therefore
every 52 years have to have 13 days
added to make Mesoamerican time
and the cosmic clock align.

at any rate based upon knowing
certain historic dates
and having WAY TOO much time
on my hands I can tell any forum
member who cares to know,
what day it is now
in the land of the dead.
